deti, fascinating, I had never heard that story. Random thought, I wonder if that in any way inspired the movie Network (whose plot begins with a news anchor threatening to commit suicide on the air; he doesn’t, though does die at the end …)?

“The social albatross that is involuntary celibacy is one that hasn’t gotten nearly as much attention as it should …”
I confess to finding the ‘incel’ explanation of people like Rodger lacking. Rodger was driven mad with envy for men who dated above his level, and falsely assumed that his UMC lifestyle features and benefits entitled him to date lingerie models, too.
Perhaps he should have dated in his own league, and failing that (it appears he didn’t bother trying), focused his energies on social success later in life.
The incel culture I find to be real is that of the married man/incel. They are truly hosed, once their wives shut down any hope of validational sex and love. But why should such a married man/incel care about Rodger? He’s just a failed consumerist, who conflated material and behavioral strategies with a meaningful life strategy. If he charmed the cops and social workers, he could have charmed some plain nice girl Playboy is not recruiting to model.

EDIT: according to wiki, it did indeed inspire Chayevsky (the author of the script)
