Bogotá, November 9, 2022. In the fourth plenary debate of the Senate of the Republic this Wednesday afternoon, the National Cancer Institute restructuring project was approved.
The decision represents support for the initiative of the National Government, led by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, to which the Institute is attached.
At a global level, the World Health Organization (WHO) states that between 30% and 50% of cancer deaths could be prevented by modifying or avoiding risk factors and implementing prevention strategies, among which screening and early cancer diagnosis stand out.
In Colombia, the 5 most common types of cancer are: breast (15,509 new cases), prostate (14,460), colon and rectum (10,783), stomach (8,214) and lung (6,876). In people under 19 years of age, the most common are leukemias and tumors of the nervous system.
With this result, the National Government also strengthens the budget of this entity for the 2023 term.
