Press Bulletin No. 093, 2018

Circular 07, 2018

Video: Press conference: fourth round of drug price regulation

Bogotá, August 6, 2018. The Ministries of Health and Commerce and the Office of the President of the Republic issued this government's last Circular on drug prices.

This puts a price limit on 902 commercial presentations of medicines. The new regulation will reduce the price of these drugs by 50 percent, on average, which will generate an annual saving of 366 billion pesos.

This new round of price control includes a greater proportion of drugs that are purchased by users in the drugstores and not through the EPSs or the hospital centers.

The most drastic reductions, proportionally, will be the antipsychotic Risperidal, which will decrease from $107,000 to $10,500 pesos (a reduction of 90%); Concor, for the treatment of heart disease, will decrease from $68,000 to $7,000 pesos (89%); and Miocardis, against the same pathology, which will go down from $110,000 to $12,000 pesos (89%).

The new Circular, which will apply starting January, also includes 64 commercial presentations of contraceptives. This type of drugs alone will grant savings of approximately 70 billion pesos per year.

For example, the monthly treatment using Yasminiq Flex pills–one of Colombians' preferred–will fall from $58,000 pesos to $22,000 pesos (62 percent less). Another, Bellaface, which cost $40,000 before, will cost $12,600 pesos (a 67 percent reduction).
