Press Bulletin No. 090, 2018

 - For the first six months of life, exclusive breastfeeding prevents disease in minors.

Bogotá, DC, August 3, 2018. According to the National Survey of the Nutritional Situation in Colombia (ENSIN) 2015, the practice of breastfeeding increased during the first hour of life by 15.4 percent, which granted 7 out of 10 newborn children breast milk as their first food.

However, the practice of exclusive breastfeeding in children under 6 months occurs in only 3 out of 10 children (36 percent), when it should be a habit to benefit all.

Elisa María Cadena, Deputy Director of Nutritional Health, said that this situation drives the Ministry of Health and Social Protection to summon all Colombians and, among all of us, to support, protect and promote exclusive breastfeeding during the first 180 days of the baby's life.

"We know that this practice benefits the newborn, but it also prevents diseases in the mother. A baby who is exclusively breastfed during this time may have up to 10 percent more IQ than those who receive other types of food," he said.

In the framework of breastfeeding week, Deputy Director Cadena reiterated that it is not just an institutional effort, but that it also covers other areas such as territorial entities, health promotion organizations (EPSs), clinics and hospitals, all labor environments, civil society, the family and health professionals, so that this practice is encouraged and exclusive breastfeeding is upheld as a pillar of life.

"We have followed the recommendations of the World Health Organization promoting exclusive breastfeeding as a key strategy for the first six months of life with adequate supplementary feeding for two years of age and more," she said.

The Ministry is encouraging this practice through different strategies, such as the family-friendly spaces for the infant's family. "We want to strengthen breastfeeding in different environments as a pillar of life and social and economic progress in the country. We have to commit even more to promoting this practice and providing a greater impact in our society," she noted.

She reported that on June 8, the Government issued Resolution 2423, establishing the technical parameters in the operation of the family-friendly spaces for the infant's family in the workplace. It regulated therefore Law 1823, 2017, which urged private companies and other entities to encourage this strategy.

The regulation highlights the commitment by directors of the different entities to allow women to continue breastfeeding. "When women are supported at the workplace, they are likely to feel happier and more motivated at work."

"In these rooms–in their workplaces–, women can be in warm and friendly spaces, which offer adequate conditions for the extraction and preservation of breast milk under technical safety standards. They later take it home, to have it available to feed the baby in the mother's temporary absence," she concluded.
